Reflecting on Holy Saturday: The Day Jesus Was Entombed

After Jesus' finished work on the cross, He had descended into the lower parts of the Earth.  What must be realized is the irony that happens on Holy Saturday.  The other day, we commemorate the death of Jesus, Holy Saturday would be the day when we commemorate His burial.  The irony itself reveals the glory of Jesus.  We see Jesus who knew no sin but He was condemned among the wicked, He was condemned among the wicked but He was to be given a proper burial thanks to Joseph of Aritmatea who was a secret discipline.  This really showed that sooner or later, true faith will reveal itself.

Here was a record of crucified victims.  Looking at Dr. Robert Charles Sproul's sermon on the burial, the bodies of crucified victims usually did not get a proper burial nor were they returned to Jerusalem.  But here was the body of Jesus taken down from the cross who had just been wrongly condemned, now He was rightfully given a proper burial.  This was going to be the transition of Jesus' glory.  Jesus' soul had already descended into the lower parts of the Earth, His body was still on Earth and this was going to be phase two.  For the body, no bone was ever broken which was to fulfill the prophecy of Psalm 34:20.

Jesus' body was anointed with spices and it was wrapped.  In spite of what atheists would want to believe, Jesus really died.  When He was crucified, He had clearly died and remember, the centurions knew how to check the bodies of dead people whom they had just crucified.  The side was pierced, flowing out blood and water.  A normal person's blood would not do that but a dead person's would proving Jesus had died.  Also, He was wrapped in graveclothes (which would have prevented any movement) and if He had swooned, open air was needed and the grave had very little air.  And yes, He truly died and He died for you and me.
