Jonathan Edwards and Two Passions

The great preacher Jonathan Edwards' quote, one can see the purpose of the life of the Christian that is for God's glory and that the Christian takes pleasure in that glory.  Ephesians 2:10 says the timeless truth of the glorious Gospel that even if your works did not save the Christian, he or she was saved to do good works that has already been before ordained for them to walk therein.  Before the Lord Jesus Christ saves the person, these good works have been before ordained for the Christian to do.  God saves the person to serve Him, not to serve sin.

As Charles Spurgeon says a good work is not wholly good unless it's done for the glory of God.  In Edwards' own words, having the passion for God's glory and having joy for that passion is the Christian life.  Christians do good works not to be saved or to stay saved but because they are already saved, they are redeemed and true salvation brings good works.  The Christian does good works out of the joy of pleasing God.  They have been saved by God's grace, it was not deserved, they only deserved Hellfire and nothing more.  When they were saved in spite of their unworthiness, it gives a real sense of gratitude that makes them live an entirely different life.

Reading the Book of Psalms, David calls the Law of God as his delight and that he seeks God to teach his precepts.  Paul says in Romans 7:22 that the Law of God is his delight.  Christians desire to please God because He had redeemed them from their sins and not in their sins.  Titus 2:11-14 says that the grace of God teaches people to go against evil and to be zealous of good works.  If these good works sprang out of by grace, these are the good works done for God's glory.
