Renewing the Mind Day by Day

Some say that the Reformation is over but for Christians, it's not over.  Although the great men of the Reformation such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, Huldrych Zwingli and John Knox have joined into glory, it is far from over because it must be done until Christ comes.

So what does it mean to renew your mind?  Like it or not, Christians will still sin even if they no longer sin all they want.  I remembered the time I doubted my salvation, a pastor once said, "We are not yet sinless but daily we sin less." which is, notice sinless from sin_less.  There is a huge difference from a sinless man vs. a man who sins less.  Let us examine some verses that talk about renewing the mind and see them in the context of God's Word.

Joshua 1:8 says, "This Book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."  Looking at the context of Joshua 1:8, this was God assuring His own that the Book of the Law is the basis of our living.  The Old Testament's moral law did not completely banish compared the ceremonial law.  In context, Joshua 1:9 also says, "Have I not commanded thee?  Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

Romans 12:2  says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."  If you read through Romans 12, the first verse tells Christians to present themselves holy and acceptable unto God.  This chapter also talks about the grace of God working in the life of the believer which results to cheerfulness and diligence.  Again, the command is to abstain from evil, hold on to what is good and if anybody doesn't obey that, I have every right to question the person's claim of conversion whether it was genuine or not.  It also includes how to fellowship with other believers to help each other renew one's mind in Christ.

2 Corinthians 14:6 says, "For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day."  Did you read that?  The inward man is renewed day by day.  In the context of Scripture, one can see how renewing day by day happens such as renouncing sin, unity with others in Christ and that the struggle with sin is an ongoing issue which reveals the need for renewal of the mind daily.

If anybody says they are Christians and refuse to believe in the concept of renewing one's mind unto God and still continue to revel in sin, that person therefore is truly a false convert of sorts.  True converts as said, will stand out in the long run.  Though a true convert may fall but they cannot totally fall away.  False converts may stay for awhile but later, they leave as 1 John 2:19 says that the proof of one's false conversion is discontinued fellowship with the Body of Christ.
