What the Bible Says About Praying and Announcing One's Fast?

As Ramadan goes on for the whole month of August, it's kind of necessary to actually get this out.  What does the Bible REALLY say about praying in public and announcing one's fast?  Here are the words of the Lord Jesus Christ who the Muslims regard as a great man and a prophet:

Matthew 6:5-8 on prayer:

"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.  But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him."

Jesus had warned about this that prayer as much as possible is to be privately done.  That is, prayer should never be used for boasting.  Islamic prayer is nothing more than show business and vain repetition, hoping that they will gain merits for Heaven.

Matthew 6:16-18- "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. but thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly."

Jesus was clear that fasting has to be done as much as possible, in secret.  Many try to advertise their fasting and it gets the praises of men.

Here's one thing that has to be made really clear: Muslims think that by keeping faithful to Ramadan, they will be forgiven of their sins and that if they do the Hadji after Ramadan, certainly it means they will gain Allah's favor.  However the Bible is clear about salvation in Ephesians 2:8-9 and Titus 3:15 that it is not by works.  John 14:6 is clear that Jesus Christ is the only Way to the Father.  Christians only do good works because they got saved resulting in a changed life forever (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 2:11-15) not in order to be saved or to stay saved.
