The Good News on Good Friday is That "It is Finished!"

Today is Good Friday and nothing makes me cringe more than to think of people who don't quite get it when Jesus said in John 19:30, "It is finished!" In Luke 23:46 we said where Jesus says, "Father into Your hands I commit my spirit." Yes it is finished but why are people still trying to add to the finished work of Christ? There's your good news - Jesus said, "It is finished!"

What's so good about "It is finished!"? He had finished His redeeming work. Hebrews 10:12 that Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins. It was never to be repeated again. There is only one sacrifice for sins. It's a once and for all sacrifice. Jesus doesn't get born every Christmas, gets crucified every Good Friday and rise up every Easter Sunday. If there's any reason to call Good Friday as good - it's because the good news is that "It is finished!"

The finished work of Christ is done. He has fulfilled the Law that man couldn't live. He had become the sin sacrifice. 1 Corinthians 5:21 says that He who knew no sin became the sin sacrifice. Hebrews 9:22 reveals the ugly truth that without bloodshed there can be no remission. If Jesus didn't do His once and for all sacrifice then all the animal sacrifices that were done yesterday will have to be done today. The Holy of Holies' veil will not be torn and there will no equal access to God.

When Jesus said, "It is finished!" - it is not a call to sin all you want but salvation from sin. How it crushes the repentant sinner's heart to think of Jesus taking their place. It would be unthinkable if anyone thought that the good news is Jesus died for sin then you can sin all you want. But the Good News is that Jesus died for your sin to set you free from it. The repentant sinner's humbled heart is then transformed to live a new life for God and no longer for one's self.

Happy Good Friday everyone!
