Spurgeon's Call for Reformation

Here are some words that come from Charles Haddon Spurgeon the prince of preachers of the 1800s in England I find to be pretty enlightening:

"We want again Luthers, Calvins, Bunyans, Whitefields, men fit to mark eras, whose names breathe terror in our foemen’s ears. We have dire need of such. Whence will they come to us? They are the gifts of Jesus Christ to the church, and they will come in due time. He has power to give us back again a golden age of preachers, and when the good old truth is once more preached by men whose lips are touched as with a live coal from off the altar, this shall be the instrument in the hand of the Spirit for bringing about a great and thorough revival of religion in the land… I do not look for any other means of converting men beyond the simple preaching of the gospel and the opening of men’s ears to hear it. The moment the church shall despise the pulpit, God will despise her. It has been through the ministry that the Lord has always been pleased to revive and bless His churches."

In this age of deception, reformers are needed.  Seriously, I could care less now what people say about me after experiencing one form of persecution after the other done by one cult after another rival cult.  From Martin Luther's defense of salvation by faith alone and good works as the result, the defense of John Calvin of the perseverance of the saints, John Bunyan and George Whitfield... such men left an impact to the Christian Church in defending the five solas all from the Bible:

  • Sola Scriptura- Scripture alone as the basis of tradition
  • Sola Gracia- Good works come out from Christians by grace alone
  • Sola Fide- Salvation is by faith alone which produces good works after salvation
  • Sola Christus- In Christ alone (John 14:6)
  • Sola Deo Gloria- Glory to God alone

Many people reject the truth of Sola Scriptura so they can have their own tradition vs. the tradition from the Word of God.  It was henceforth that why Martin Luther wrote the 95 theses against the apostate Whore of Revelation.  It was also the defense of many Reformers and the pre-Reformers against Rome's teachings that were unscriptural namely:

  • Scripture PLUS manmade tradition.  While claiming them to be apostolic, however they hardly follow the traditions of the Apostolic letters.
  • Graces need to be earned.  Again a perversity of Romans 11:6.  God's grace cannot be earned and yet it makes Christians do good works (Titus 2:11-15).
  • Faith plus works salvation which is not faith at all.  The Bible is clear that salvation is by faith that results to works, not works result to salvation.  James 2 was used to "justify" such an error, however if one reads James 2:10-11 the chapter does not each faith plus works salvation but rather shows true faith is alive, not dead.  Believers of conditional security are prideful and guilty of teaching works salvation.
  • Not by Christ alone.  Although Catholicism denies that by word, but by action they are guilty.  Catholics are misled into believing that before they can go to Jesus, they have to pass through Mary, angels, saints, etc. which is a BIG LIE.  Mary did not invite people to her to Jesus, she instead told them, "Do whatever He tells you." (John 2:5)
  • Glory to God alone is perverted with the rituals of praying to Mary, those who were canonnized as sain and angels.  Just for example in the Rosary, it has more Hail Marys than "Our Fathers", Mary is more prayed to than Jesus and for every request another saint is invoked.  Seriously that is discrediting God's omnipotence and don't even dare stick at me they're just showing their love for God.  That's just plain ridiculous.
