Gleaning Important Lessons from Peter's First Sermon in Acts

Image
Today is Pentecost Sunday which is on the seventh Sunday after Easter Sunday. Acts 2 opens up with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has always been co-eternal and co-equal with the Father. Deists would want to say that the Holy Spirit is just a force. Genesis 1:26 where God said, "Let us create man..." - the Father couldn't be talking to the angels. Rather, the Father was talking to the Son and the Holy Spirit. Who else could create but God? Doesn't God exist as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? The Spirit of God is mentioned in the Old Testament. John 14 has Jesus promising the Holy Spirit as the Comforter. Jesus was soon going to physically leave the Earth and He ascended in Acts 1.  Peter could no longer be the same. John 21 reveals Peter's restoration. Peter was allowed to taste failure so he can appreciate his restoration. Jesus had restored Peter back into the pastorate. Peter would later begin his first pastoral work in Acts 2...

Three Erroneous Ways Unsaved Sinners Disrespect God's Law

Image
God's Law is really offensive, isn't it? The Law itself its offensive for this reason. Martin Luther called it a hammer that smashes our self-righteousness, a mirror that reveals our sinfulness and a whip that drives us to the cross. Galatians 3:24 calls the Law as a schoolmaster to teach right from wrong. Romans 3:19 reveals that the Law of God reveals all our sins and all stand guilty before it. Unfortunately, there are three erroneous ways that sinful man could look at God's Law. First, we have the problem of man thinking that they are right before the Law or that they can make it to Heaven their way  We have the problem where man hates the idea that they are not basically good or that they are good enough to enter Heaven. The idea is very wrong as James 2:10-11 says that it only takes one sin to forfeit one's entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. Do you even think you are not safe from the list in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10? If you think you are then you are just down...

The Deadly Heresy of Preaching a Christ Who is Savior But Not Lord

Image
It's really find it crazy how a heresy that says you can receive Jesus Christ as your Savior but submitting to Him as Lord is completely optional. That idea left me blank-faced because of the fact that Romans 10:9 says this one truth: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Did you read that? Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ. It's really similar to confessing that Jesus is Lord. If your Jesus is not Lord then you are not saved. I find the idea that Jesus should just be my personal Savior but not my personal Lord and Savior. That would make every Christian the personal servant of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus is Lord yet why do so many want to deny His Lordship? The word Kurious in Greek means "supreme in authority" so can you even think of accepting someone who is Kurious as Savior without being Lord? That kind of idea is i...

Ezekiel's Experience in the Valley of Dry Bones Proves It's Stupid to Try Having a Revival Without God's Holy Spirit at Work

Image
I was listening to the very recent sermon of Pastor Paul Tabanao who is a missionary to Cambodia. It had me thinking of how Cambodia still shakes my very bones with the sad history of the Khmer Rouge. How many percent of the victims were saved? How many of them right now are even tormenting Pol Pot in the very pits of Hell? Hell will be more than hot enough for Pol Pot's depravity. Out of this tragedy came the Khmer Rouge museum which displayed the bones of the many victims and this is where he brought the preaching to Ezekiel 37:1-14. 1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, 2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O LORD God, thou knowest. 4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them,...

Pastors With Dirty Mouths Aren't Fit to Preach in God's Pulpit

Image
It's a problem but some pastors do have a dirty mouth. It doesn't fit into the qualification of God's pastor. Pastors are not only called to be family men but to be also of good character. Here's what 1 Timothy 3:1-7 says about the qualifications of a pastor: This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. A pasto...

Modernization is Not an Excuse to Dismiss Badly Needed Old-Fashioned Revivals

Image
I remembered reading through Jeremiah can be a chore because the events of that book continue to repeat itself. At the same time, reading through Jeremiah can be a comfort because the prophet chose to stand by God's command even if he momentarily stopped preaching (Jeremiah 20:5). One verse that is used to call for old fashioned revivals is Jeremiah 6:16 which says: Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. It's a problem you start calling for old-fashioned revivals and people will call you outdated or a neanderthal. While there's nothing wrong with modern technology but the problem is when people only care if something is modern. While modernization can be used to evangelize but it can also be used to spread the influence of sin. The same printing press that allowed the late Martin Luther to publish Bibles was a...

If That Preaching Doesn't Hurt Anyone With Biblical Truth Then That Preaching is Bogus

Image
It's very typical today to have seeker sensitive preaching. While I don't suggest people to be as cheesy and offensive as possible like some Christian ministries that tend to generalize certain religious people as criminals (ex. Roman Catholics, Muslims) instead of victims of false preaching but it's not good to be seeker sensitive either. The problem is that many times is that many foolish preachers today don't even preach the Bible as it is to people as they are in fear of not having enough people attending (and financing) their pulpits. The Bible is so offensive to many because the truth about sin and salvation is so real. The paradox is that getting saved could be the easiest thing but it could also be the hardest thing to do. What's so hard to believe about the Gospel? It's because a lot of the Gospel challenges our thinking. It's easier to believe you can be saved by your own good works than it is easy to believe that you can't save yourself. I...

You Can't Preach About God's Love For Sinners Without Preaching About His Wrath Against Sin

Image
It's a problem that so many quack preachers love to preach God's love for sinners but not about God's wrath against them because He must punish both the sin and the sinner. Everything from God's love to His wrath is dictated by the fact that He is holy and you are not. The message about God's love for sinners will make no sense if you don't preach about God's wrath against sin first. I remembered listening to "Hell's Best Kept Secret" and "True and False Conversion" by Ray Comfort. There was this point where Kirk Cameron talked about what if I sold my property to save someone from a disease. If the person doesn't know anything about the disease then my selling of all my property to pay for the badly needed treatment won't make sense. Another illustration was all about the flight. You have to tell the person that the parachute is not meant to improve the flight but to tell the person that it's for emergency reasons. If you...

Well, This Portrait Shows How Out of Context Preaching Can Be So Dangerous!

Image
Do you know that a pseudo-Christian organizations are faultily built on out of context preaching? Whenever I study these organizations whether it'd be the Roman Catholic institution, the Mormons, the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Iglesia ni Cristo or any of them claiming to be the true church or the true church restored after its apostasy (that's not Bible teaching, either), we can be certain that out of context preaching out of context is indeed dangerous. Many people are in Hell today all because of quack preachers who keep taking verses out of context. Many of them either have a false security in their good works or in their belief that Christians can still remain the same as before. Either way, both the works salvationist and the Antinomian aren't regenerate Christians but they're still degenerate sinners. The portrait above shows the example of how stupid out of context preaching is. The person in green is putting God to the test by misquoting Philippians 4:13....

The False Gospel Appeals to Carnal Minds!

Image
It's really a problem that can make any Christian sick whenever there are the Easy "Christians" who seek to tailor the Gospel to carnal minds. There's no way that the Gospel was meant to be tasteful to carnal minds. Why is the Gospel so distasteful to the carnal mind? Remember there are three areas of temptation that the Gospel attacks without any hesitation. 1 John 2:16 - "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. There's no reason that the Gospel caters to all three areas of temptation. When you talk about salvation from sin and not to sin that attacks the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes. When you talk about salvation not by one's own personal merits but by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ then that attacks the pride of life. The Gospel wasn't meant to cater to sin lovers and arrogant people but to humble, repentant peo...

Theological Warning: Easy-Gesis or Out of Context Preaching Is Super Dangerous!

Image
Got Questions defines eisegesis from the article " What is the difference between exegesis and eisegesis " as: The opposite approach to Scripture is eisegesis, which is the interpretation of a passage based on a subjective, non-analytical reading. The word eisegesis literally means "to lead into," which means the interpreter injects his own ideas into the text, making it mean whatever he wants . Why is eisegesis or out of context preaching really more used? Most people today are just too lazy. The preacher is really that lazy to study the Bible for himself. It's always easier to take Scriptures out of their context than understanding them in context. But just like easy believism, it really gives disastrous results. If easy believism shelters false converts then it also advocates eisegesis preaching. 2 Peter 3:16 warns of people who twist around the Word of God. That's what eisegesis does to the presentation of God's Word. It's also appropriate ...
